Guitar strings should be changed every 3- 6 months. Professional players can change strings every week, (or more!) during heavy playing periods.
Strings degrade over time, so changing strings is important for sound quality & play-ability. It also just looks better having shiny silver strings, rather than worn, rusty brown ones!
 
String Tips
Strings should have a consistent colouring along the length of the string, and be free of rust & finger funk.
Clean your strings by wiping down with soft lint-free cloth after each play. This removes a lot of sweat etc... contributing to string degradation.
